Descripción : The present investigation evaluated the achira (Canna indica) as an alternative material to elaborate biodegradable tableware in the Province of Cotopaxi, Canton Latacunga. Due to the contamination evidenced in the "CEASA" campus, produced by the polystyrene tableware, it was proposed to study a new biodegradable material that is friendly to the environment and can replace the plastic. In the parish of San Buenaventura, canton Latacunga, province of Cotopaxi, in-situ visits were made and with the help of a GPS, the location of achira plants was determined. Within this sector a potential production area of 176 ha was drawn. From which you could take 1 or 2% (1 to 3 ha) of it. To perform the feasibility study of achira production, surveys were applied to the population with a simple random sample of 50 respondents and with closed questions.Due to the need for low investment during cultivation and a high profit margin, the benefits are both socioeconomic and environmental. This crop does not need chemicals (fertilizers, insecticides, herbicides, etc.), and it is easy to harvest. The achira leaf was subjected to thermal tests, it was determined that the optimum temperature to obtain the dry leaf and grind it is 136-280 ºC. The dried leaves were used in the preparation of the new material. From this was made a sheet that was analyzed in mechanical tests The leaf-based sheet and achira starch was subjected to mechanical tests. In the tests it was obtained that the composite material has a tensile strength of 30 KPa, being greater than the tensile strength of 23.58 KPa of LDPE. The elongation value of the composite material was 12%, higher than that of the LDPE (10%). It concluded that the new material is suitable for the preparation of biodegradable tableware, because it proves to be resistant by means of its traction analysis. Also shows to be deformable in the elongation analysis, to be resistant to medium temperatures and both characteristics show that the material is suitable for thermoforming
