The objective of this project is to use the circular economy for the optimization of resources and reduction in the consumption of raw materials in small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) in the San Buenaventura parish of the Latacunga Canton, Province of Cotopaxi, in order to develop circular economy strategies applicable to SMEs. For this, a methodology with a qualitative approach was used, which allowed for in-depth exploration of the experiences, perceptions, and practices carried out by each of the companies regarding the circular economy. Surveys, interviews, and observations were included for data collection. The data were analyzed using the analytical-synthetic method to identify patterns and trends. Finally, the results obtained in the first instance allowed us to identify 40 companies that operate within the area, of which 28 companies indicated (70%) that they are not actively implementing practices to optimize the use of resources and reduce the consumption of raw materials. At the same time, 12 companies (30%) indicated that they are taking measures based on the principles of circular economy, demonstrating interest and environmental awareness towards long-term sustainability. Therefore, the present study made it possible to establish circular economy strategies for a significant reduction in the consumption of raw materials and an improvement in the operational efficiency of MyPES companies. This project contributes to knowledge about the practical implementation of the circular economy, providing concrete strategies such as the implementation of: a new, more efficient production design, recycling and collection programs, education, and awareness, among others, to improve business sustainability.
