    Selección del índice de los caracteres de importancia económica de los animales del programa de mejoramiento genético en bovinos del cantón Saquisilí de la parroquia Chantilín.

    In the Cotopaxi province, in the Saquisilí canton, in the Chantilín parish, it was carried out a study to estimate the total merit index of the sustainable genetic improvement program about dairy cattle, given that in the country there is no phenotypic and genotypic information about the animals, leading to a low production and profitability. This is why it was necessary to gather information from 26 owners, with a total of 114 animals; it was gathered information such as: daily weight gain, milk density, milk production at 305 days, height at the cross and monthly costs. The results shown that the parish has an average of $0.12 from the milk production, with a monthly profit of 73,04 dollars, which is low for the sustainability of families of the whole parish. Moreover, a better animal was obtained with a daily weight gain of 541.54 g/day, it is estimated that in the next generation it will reach 700g/day; the best animal for the milk production has a value of 1278.009 kg/lactation, which means that it would need 4 generations in order to meet the goal of 5000 kg/lactation; for the density the best animal reached a value of 1.022.452 g/ml, it would need 5 generations to reach the right value that is 1.28g/ml; finally, the animal that reached an adequate height has a value of 121.225cm/to the cross, and it is estimated to meet the goal that in the next generation. All these results were obtained through the statistical method of the best linear unbiased predictor (BLUP). Finally, the characters gathered can be observed that the height is one of the strengths of the parish, while the weaknesses are the daily weight gain, density and milk production, therefore it is necessary to improve these characters and reach betters results and better results must be achieved in the next generations.
