- ItemAnálisis del índice de selección del programa de mejoramiento genético sostenible bovinos de leche de la parroquia Mulliquindil Santa Ana en el periodo 2023.(Ecuador: Latacunga: Universidad Técnica de Cotopaxi (UTC)., 2024-08) Guagchinga Landa, Bryan Paul; Beltrán Romero, Cristian FernandoThe situation in the Mulliquindil Santa Ana parish is alarming for small producers who focus on producing milk, not only due to limited income, but also because of the non-compliance with the established standard prices. These producers were forced to accept the prices offered, without considering the necessary costs to produce a liter of milk. Additionally, the empirical management and lack of record base negatively affect the maintenance and development of the livestock herd. This research report analyzes the selection index of traits, cost and benefit to precisely identify the financial situation, trait performance, and the strengths and weaknesses of the selection index in the sustainable genetic improvement program for dairy cattle in the Mulliquindil Santa Ana parish, part of the Salcedo Canton in the Cotopaxi province. Data were collected from 68 animals across 22 farms belonging to project participants, focusing on phenotypic traits. Using the BLUP method, the estimated breeding value (EBV) was analyzed, along with the response to selection in terms of weight, gain, milk production, milk density, and height at the withers. In addition, investments in milk production were estimated, excluding labor costs. The results obtained were the following: the average GDP in the parish in cows is 238.076 g, the average generated by cows is 150 g and the average value in calves is 159.40 g; the milk production at 305 days is 267.52 L; the LD is 1.027 g/ml; and the height at the withers is 134.11 cm. Regarding EBV, it was found that the GDP has a heritability of 0.22, with a maximum in cows, is the cow “estrellita” with 114.57 g, in heifers it is “Chiquilla” with 41.53 g and in heifers it is“ Lunita” with 81.132 g. Milk production at 305 days has a heritability of 0.24 and a reliability of 41%, a maximum of 633.990 L., is the cow “Lucha”. The LD has a heritability of 0.32 and a reliability of 50%, with a maximum value of 0.0024 g/ml, being the “Dominga” cow the most outstanding. Finally, the height at withers has a heritability of 0.42 and a reliability of 55%, with a minimum of 1.20 cm, the “Colorada” cow standing out in decreasing the character. The main strength is the proximity in milk production to the standard and the weakness is with the low density and very large animals at the height at the withers. The cost-benefit analysis of the data shows that the average cost of production in the parish is 0.39 cents. Considering a selling price of 0.42 cents per liter of milk, the monthly income from milk sales amounts to approximately $272.17, resulting in a monthly profit of $70.21.
