The development of reading habits is a fundamental process in academic education because it supports comprehension, autonomous learning, and participation across different areas of knowledge. This study aimed to analyze the development of reading habits among General Basic Education students based on their perceptions and behaviors during activities supported by illustrated storybooks. A quantitative approach with a descriptive scope and non-experimental, cross-sectional design was used. The participants were 11 sixth-grade students from the “Juan Amador” Educational Institution. Data was collected through a ten-item structured survey using a Likert-type scale and an observation guide consisting of eight indicators. Frequencies and percentages were used for data analysis. The results showed that 10 of the 11 students reported that images always or almost always helped them understand the stories, while all participants considered that illustrated storybooks made reading more interesting. However, eight students were classified at a medium level of active participation, and responses concerning their interest in continuing to read other stories were heterogeneous. It was concluded that illustrated storybooks were associated with favorable assessments of comprehension and interest during reading activities. Nevertheless, the consolidation of autonomous reading habits requires systematic experiences, continuous access to reading materials, teacher mediation, and family involvement
