Análisis de vulnerabilidad en la producción agrícola frente al cambio climático mediante la metodología CVCA, en la comunidad de Quinte Buena Esperanza, parroquia de Toacaso

The Climate Vulnerability and Capacity Analysis (CVCA) methodology emerged as a participatory research tool—essential for decision-making—to strengthen community resilience. The research aimed to analyze agricultural production vulnerability regarding climate change using the CVCA methodology in the community of Quinte Buena Esperanza, in the Toacaso parish. The study was conducted through seven workshops employing participatory diagnostic tools, such as risk maps, historical timelines, seasonal calendars, daily activity clocks, household decision-making charts, Venn diagrams, and vulnerability matrices. Subsequently, the CVCA analysis was conducted, incorporating insights from key informant interviews. The CVCA results revealed critical climate risks, such as drought. Evidence also showed an excessive workload for women and limited autonomy in decision-making. However, valuable social capital was observed, supported by NGOs and public and private institutions (84.62%). Four strategies were defined to mitigate the effects of climate change and foster community adaptation to these threats. The first proposal focused on constructing roadside embankments and planting native vegetation. The second adaptation measure considered was the diversification of drought-resistant crops, such as quinoa. The third strategic action involved agroforestry, specifically implementing crops with low water requirements. The fourth solution involved incorporating earthworm humus and organic garlic-and-chili-based liquid fertilizers (biol) to improve soil quality and control pests ecologically. The CVCA methodology is effective for analyzing community vulnerability to climate change and generates evidence to plan adaptation strategies aimed at improving agricultural production and ensuring food security for Andean communities in Ecuador.
