Avian Reovirus affects birds around the world, causing mainly tenosynovitis, a disease that brings with it the appearance of not only joint problems, but also digestive, respiratory and muscular disorders, causing the death of infected birds. The symptoms in the most advanced stage of the disease are very difficult to determine, due to the diversity of differential diagnoses to which they are exposed. The main impact that is evident in backyard poultry producers is the economic losses due to the death of birds after being infected with Reovirus. However, it should be noted that it does not cause harm to public health since it is not zoonotic. The objective of this work was to identify the prevalence of Reovirus in backyard birds from the sample bank that is kept in the laboratories of the Technical University of Cotopaxi, in the cantons of Latacunga and Saquisili, by applying the ELISA test to 147 blood serum samples taken randomly. The results of the study showed that there is a prevalence in the canton of Latacunga with 92% of positive cases and Saquisili with 74% of positive cases. It was possible to show that the disease is not controlled in backyard birds, and has a high rate of morbidity and mortality, due to the lack of knowledge of its existence by producers and professionals in the veterinary field. With the results obtained, it is recommended to establish biosecurity measures in birds.
