This project focused on building a prototype to create 3D filament. PLA (Polylactic Acid) with a density of 1.24 g/𝑐𝑚􀬷 was used as raw material, which requires a temperature of 200 °C for its melting. The design of the extruder machine began with the construction of a square hopper made of ASTM A36 steel with a capacity of 8.27 kg. For the auger, a 1 ¼ in tungsten carbide drill bit was used, with a diameter of 32 mm and a length of 400 mm. For the extruder cylinder, AISI 1020 steel was also used, with an inner diameter of 50 mm and a length of 675 mm. The cooling system used a DC fan. Finally, a support structure was built in 6 mm ASTM A36 steel. A control board was implemented using the Arduino Mega 2560 microcontroller using serial communication via TX/RX protocol (HMI) to start a DC geared motor, with a PWM controller an Arduino mega was used to control the three thermocouples and three 250 W clamp resistors, which allowed them to be turned on or off according to a reference value of 190 °C. Finally, the extruder was tested for operation.
