- ItemProducción de abonos orgánicos a partir de residuos sólidos urbanos en el cantón Salcedo provincia de Cotopaxi 2026(Universidad Técnica de Cotopaxi (UTC). Ciencias Agropecuarias y Recursos Naturales. Ambiental, 2026-10-19) Ortiz Ramos, Jessica Isabel; Panchi Chila, Denys Josué; Cajas Cayo, Issac EduardoThe objective of this research was to produce organic fertilizers from municipal solid waste generated in the Salcedo canton, Cotopaxi province, with the aim of utilizing the organic fraction of the waste, reducing the amount sent to landfills, and contributing to sustainable environmental management through compost production. As part of the research, the following actions were undertaken: analyzing an organic waste management system for converting waste into compost; characterizing the types and quantities of organic waste generated in the Salcedo canton; and designing an organic compost production system using the waste generated in the canton. The research was conducted using a mixed-methods approach, with a descriptive and non-experimental design. The physical characterization was carried out through sampling in 115 households, representing a population of 479 residents, over seven consecutive days. The results showed a total generation of 633.94 kg of solid organic waste and a per capita production of 0.19 kg/person/day. Furthermore, the surveys revealed that 82.7% of the population recognizes the potential of organic waste to produce compost, while 17.3% indicated they were unaware of the proper composting process. The compost obtained from vegetables, fruits, food scraps, and yard waste was subjected to physical and chemical analyses, yielding pH values between 6.92 and 7.42, moisture content ranging from 33.5% to 41.2%, organic matter content ranging from 47.9% to 58.4%, organic carbon ranging from 27.5% to 33.2%, total nitrogen from 1.43% to 1.95%, phosphorus from 0.57% to 0.83%, potassium from 2.29% to 3.54%, and a C/N ratio between 16:1 and 20:1, in addition to adequate concentrations of calcium, magnesium, and micronutrients, indicating a stabilized compost of good agronomic quality. It is concluded that the utilization of municipal solid waste through composting constitutes a technically, environmentally, and socially viable alternative for strengthening the circular economy, reducing environmental pollution, and improving the integrated management of solid waste in the Salcedo canton.
