This study aims to characterize the solid waste generated in the city, its per capita production in the urban area, and to develop a proposal tailored to the city's needs. The methodology employed included the deductive method, which allowed the collection of notes based on the objectives, and the inductive method, which facilitated data collection through observations. The quartering method was used to determine that 56% of the waste is organic matter and 44% is inorganic matter, with glass accounting for 3.26%, plastic 3.26%, metal 2.27%, cardboard 1.90%, paper 2.18%, and textiles 10.05%. This refers to household waste. As for non-household waste, 56% of the waste is inorganic, with glass accounting for 6.23%, plastic 1.70%, metal 3.83%, cardboard 2.27%, and paper 1.85%, with a total per capita production of 1.07 kg (person/day). Additionally, 430 surveys were conducted, distributed across the different urban parishes of the city. The data collected highlights a prevalence of organic waste in households, representing 56% of the total. This waste mainly comes from activities related to food commerce and export. In contrast, non-household waste is predominantly composed of inorganic elements, reaching 58%, reflecting the focus of local productive activities. Based on the results obtained, integrated management strategies were developed, including waste reduction, recycling, and proper disposal. These strategies aim to optimize current management practices and minimize adverse environmental impacts. In conclusion, the study suggests that the implementation of environmental education programs, accompanied by incentives for proper waste management and composting techniques, could significantly improve waste management in the canton. These initiatives would not only enhance the local capacity to manage waste efficiently but could also serve as a model for other communities. This comprehensive and collaborative approach promotes sustainable and effective management, demonstrating that significant and lasting results in waste management are achievable.
