    “Caracterización de la cadena comercial frutícola de los principales mercados de Latacunga”

    The current research was carried out in the main markets from Latacunga city, in the Cotopaxi province, where the aforementioned centers have experienced difficulties, due to the commercial knowledge lack in the fruit sector, as well as the little support from other institutions in training of the management and fruits trade. The aim consisted to characterize fruit traders, through a census with the application a survey with 41 variables designed in social and economic aspects. The results revealed, what the majority of participants in this activity are adults, and mainly women. Since the economic view point, it was highlighted, which the income main source comes from the fruit’s sale in greater demand by consumers. The characterization allowed to identify the critical points, what affect fruit sellers in the most important markets from Latacunga city. The fruit merchant’s socioeconomic analysis in Latacunga identifies several challenges, which limit the sustainable development and growth their businesses. The majority (84%) are women, but they face difficulties, due to training lack (65%) and institutional support. Informal trade has a negative impact the 75%, creating unfair competition and limiting income. Accessibility to transport means is a problem for a minority that affect the products movement. The professional advice lacks and the increase in informal trade are critical factors, which impede its sustainability and development. It is recommended, what authorities are implemented training programmes, strengthen institutional support, regulate informal trade, improve access to transport efficient means and offer professional advisory services to foster sustainable development.
