Hidráulica, 2026-10-14) Aguaisa Cando, Alison Fernanda; Barahona Tonato, Steven Alexander (pendiente); Zambrano Valverde, Mariella Fernanda
The existing water intake system located in San Agustín de Callo, Mulaló Parish, Latacunga Canton, which supplies Saquisilí Canton, is an important infrastructure for ensuring the continuity of the water supply service and is exposed to hazards associated with a potential eruption of Cotopaxi Volcano. The objective of this research was to conduct a semi-quantitative assessment of the system’s vulnerability to these hazards, considering the physical, functional or operational, environmental, and organizational or administrative dimensions, in order to identify its main weaknesses and establish prevention and mitigation measures. The research was conducted using a semi-quantitative approach through technical field inspections, direct observation, photographic records, interviews, documentary review, topographic surveying, and hydrological and spatial analysis using Geographic Information Systems. The vulnerability of the water intake structure and sedimentation tank was assessed using evaluation matrices and weighting factors obtained through the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). Finally, prevention and mitigation measures were proposed to strengthen the infrastructure, administrative management, and response capacity, with the aim of contributing to the continuity and safety of the water supply to Saquisilí Canton in the event of a potential eruption of Cotopaxi Volcano.

Hidráulica, 2026-10-14) Sunta Chisaguano, Lisbeth Yajaira; Tacuri Asimbaya, Angeles Maria; Mogro Cepeda, Yenson Vinicio
This research aimed to evaluate the sustainability of Zone 2 of the Río San Juan-Patoa technified irrigation project, located in the Pujilí canton, Cotopaxi province, through the analysis of indicators corresponding to the economic, ecological, and sociocultural dimensions. The study involved the characterization of irrigation system users and the application of surveys to producers. The information obtained was processed using Microsoft Excel, and indicators and sub-indicators were used to determine the sustainability indices for each dimension, applying the methodology proposed by Sarandón. The characterization results showed that 52% of users are exclusively engaged in agriculture, while the remaining 48% carry out other activities or combine agriculture with other economic activities. Likewise, 76% of producers stated that they had not received training or technical assistance, compared to 24% who had received this type of support. Regarding income, 68% of producers reported monthly incomes below USD 200, while 32% reported incomes above this amount. The sustainability assessment resulted in an index of 2.27 for the economic dimension, 2.35 for the ecological dimension, and 2.33 for the sociocultural dimension. The General Sustainability Index reached a value of 2.32, corresponding to a low level of sustainability, considering that a value above 2.5 is required to reach an acceptable level of sustainability. The results highlight the need to strengthen producers' capacities through actions focused on the efficient use of the irrigation system, conservation of natural resources, access to financing, and organizational strengthening. Therefore, a training plan is proposed to improve the sustainability indicators of Zone 2 of the Río San Juan-Patoa technified irrigation project.

This study aimed to design a sanitary and stormwater drainage system for the town of Salache Angamarca La Calle, located in the Salcedo canton, San Miguel parish. To achieve this, specialized hydraulic software was used to optimize the collection, transport, and proper disposal of wastewater and surface runoff. The methodology employed a quantitative, descriptive-inductive-deductive, and analytical approach, utilizing both documentary and field research. It was structured in three fundamental stages: first, demographic, hydrological, and existing infrastructure information was gathered and examined; second, a topographic survey was conducted using geodetic techniques and GPS devices to accurately determine elevations and slopes; and finally, the hydraulic modeling of the system was performed using specialized software to technically calculate the pipes, manholes, and additional structures. The results obtained allowed for projecting future population growth of 1.56% over the 25-year period, calculating progressive sanitary and stormwater flow rates, and defining a technically feasible route that adapts to the natural terrain slope, which ranges from approximately 2,825 to 2,795 meters above sea level. The design ensures gravity-fed operation with appropriate slopes and velocities maintained within the established ranges for self-cleaning, thus preventing sedimentation or hydraulic overloads. The maximum accumulated flow rate in the final section of the network reaches approximately 8.33 L/s. In summary, the designed system meets current technical and regulatory standards, ensuring hydraulic efficiency, operational sustainability, and economic viability by not requiring pumping stations. Furthermore, the incorporation of technologies during the design process increased the technical precision and reliability of the results, contributing to improved sanitary and environmental conditions for the community.

Hidráulica, 2026-10-14) Chicaiza Vargas, Jazmin Noemi; Tixilema Ruiz, Nelly Margoth; Cusme Intriago, Rudys Rafael
Monitoring water retained in the soil’s superficial part faces challenges in Andean-Amazonian ecosystems, where caused an accident orography rugged terrain and constant cloud limit normal measurements, in this work, it was assessed the spatiotemporal variability of surface moisture in the Pastaza River basin, integrating advanced geoprocessing and remote sensing. The basin delineation through computational processes achieved a Jaccard index of 0.78 compared to the cartography presented by the Environment Ministry. Starting at the study time of January 2025 to January 2026, it was processed Sentinel-1 radar signals and Sentinel-2 multispectral data, by lacking a physical calibration, it was used a multi-criteria spatial index, which isolates noise from biomass and integrates backscatter with topography. The statistical assessment, based on a linear regression model with a deterministic coefficient of 0.04 to 0.30, established the impact of gravitational drainage imposed by the high slopes, this generated cartography is a fundamental exploratory input for decision-makers and the agricultural production sector to structure future early warning mechanisms before water deficits.

This project describes the methodology used to design and implement an off-grid hybrid photovoltaic system to meet a portion of the energy demand of the medical clinic and outdoor areas in the San José de Alpamalag community, located in the Pujilí canton. Initially, a geographic survey of the area was conducted using Google Earth, which allowed us to determine the project’s location and analyze the site’s environmental conditions. Subsequently, the available solar resource was evaluated using irradiance data obtained from NASA POWER, determining the energy generation conditions and establishing the Peak Solar Hours (PSH), which range from 3.41 to 5.01 hours depending on the monthly variation in solar radiation. Based on the analysis of the battery bank’s autonomy, it was possible to determine its performance under conditions of peak system demand, considering a load of 1.2 kW corresponding to the internal and external lighting circuits and power outlets. The 5.12 kWh battery bank, with a usable energy capacity of 4.608 kWh, reaches a depth of discharge of 90% and provides 3 hours and 50 minutes of operating time. This result demonstrates that the system fulfills its function as an energy backup for the medical clinic, enabling it to maintain priority loads during power outages
