Evaluating the economic weights in the selection index within the sustainable genetic improvement program for dairy cattle in the Toacaso parish, arises from the need to optimize the allocation of resources and improve the profitability and competitiveness of the livestock sector in the region through the creation and tabulation of data records. Three key objectives were proposed that helped to determine the most effective economic weights for the main characteristics in genetic improvement, also examine how these weights impact the profitability and effectiveness of the program, and therefore formulate recommendations to adjust the programs based on the obtained results. The adopted methodology was through a descriptive observational approach, which included the collection of detailed data on genealogy, daily weight gain, milk production and density, as well as the costs associated with livestock farming. These data were analyzed using tools such as Excel and BLUP quantitative genetics programs, which allow to do a precise analysis of the influence of the evaluated characteristics on the producers´ incomes. The results based on the heritability of the features showed that daily weight gain, liters of milk produced in 305 days and open days with a heritability of (0,28; 0,2; 0,14) respectively, were the most notable aspects concerning with sustainable genetic improvement of dairy cattle. With a special mention regarding longevity with a heritability of 0.18, is considered a characteristic of high genetic value. Among the most important impacts, we have improvements in reproductive synchronization, the use of artificial insemination to increase the genetic value of animals, and avoiding soil erosion and the greenhouse effect through a sustainable production in the parish. These results denote the importance of adjusting genetic improvement programs based on solid economic data, in order to guarantee the sustainability and profitability of the sector.
