- ItemCaudal, Fuentes Hídricas y Crecimiento poblacional en las Zonas Altas de Eloy Alfaro(Ecuador: Latacunga: Universidad Técnica de cotopaxi (UTC), 2024-10-12) Cóndor Mallitasig Leonel Geovanny; Moreano Martínez Luis DavidThis research addresses the ramifications of population increase and the proliferation of urban development in the delicate páramos ecosystems within the Eloy Alfaro parish, located in the canton of Latacunga, Ecuador, as well as the implications of this phenomenon on the availability of water resources over the last decade. A quantitative methodology, using census data, satellite images, and field assessments, was adopted to assess the extent of these alterations. The results indicate that the population has increased by 45%, leading to chaotic urban expansion that has reduced the páramos surface by 15%, negatively impacting water regulation mechanisms. Forecasts suggest that by 2040, the population is expected to reach 12,000 people, which will raise water demand to unsustainable levels. The current water supply is insufficient, and if corrective measures are not taken, the water deficit is expected to increase significantly. Proposed interventions include strategies for páramos conservation, optimizing water use, and establishing sustainable water infrastructure as possible remedies to address this crisis.
