First, the study area was delimited, and the existing protections were analyzed. A short-circuit analysis revealed that the ANSI 50 and ANSI 51 protections, designed for a radial system, were inadequate for the new meshed topology due to the bidirectional nature of the current flow, leading to the disconnection of elements not affected by faults. Additionally, it was observed that protections were only present at one end of the lines, hindering timely fault clearance. To overcome this, a new coordination scheme was presented involving the implementation of directional relays ANSI 67/67N at both ends of the lines and transformers, along with distance protections ANSI 21/21N on the critical Illuchi 1 – El Calvario and Illuchi 2 – El Calvario lines. Parameters such as iPickup and operating time were adjusted to ensure selective operation. The new coordination maintained a minimum discrimination margin of 0.2 seconds between the protection curves, significantly enhancing the system’s selectivity and sensitivity.
